|
 The fall grape harvest, or crush season, is the
busiest time of the year for vineyard managers and the winemaker.
Harvest starts as early as August; first with the whites; reds are
harvested in early October and late harvest wines made from over ripe,
almost raisin grapes, are picked in November. The wine making, or vint,
process then begins. During and after grape harvest the rows of vines
turn colors, the leaves fall and the bare canes are ready for winter
pruning to prepare for the next year's growth. Autumn also affects the
color of the grapes themselves; syrah grapes turn bright red where other
grapes turn a yellow or greenish brown. Oenology, the science of making
wine, is very much a topic for autumn digestion.
